The Companions Radiant quests are mostly random when you help Aela, Farkas, Skjor, or Vilkas early in the questline. However, once you complete a certain amount of quests or some major quests in the Companions questline, these objectives change slightly. You can begin the first hunt quests as soon as you become a member until you complete the
Companions Quest – Blood’s Honor, then you can complete the second quests until Companions Quest – Glory of the Dead. After that, the last quests are available from Aela, Farkas, and Vilkas.

Reward: None, but can choose to be cured of lycanthropy
Farkas or Vilkas will ask you to collect a Glenmore Witch Head to cure themselves of the curse of the werewolf. If you wiped out all of the witches for the Companions Quest – Blood’s Honor, then you should already have the witches’ heads in your inventory and can skip returning to the area. If not, find the cave at the Glenmore Coven area and slay another, taking the head. Throw the witch’s head into the Flame of the Harbinger in Ysgramor’s Tomb (as found in the Companions Quest – Glory of the Dead) and kill the wolf spirit that emerges. You can do the same for yourself, but know that you can never use your werewolf beast form again if you do.

Dragon Seekers

Quest Giver: Farkas or Vilkas
Objective: Kill dragon at (dragon location)
Location: Random
Reward: Dragon Soul
Take Farkas or Vilkas to the randomly generated area and slay the dragon there. You receive a dragon soul for defeating the dragon, but you do not get a reward from the Companions for doing so.

Take Up Arms

Objectives:

Speak to Kodlak Whitemane

Train with Vilkas

Give Vilkas’s Sword to Eorland

Bring Aela her shield

Follow Farkas to your Quarters

When you enter the Whiterun area for the first time, you will witness a group of warriors killing a giant reeking havoc on a farm. Assist them and Aela will inform you about the Companions group based in the mead hall Jorrvaskr in town. Head to the hall area right of Dragonsreach and speak with Skjor.

The rest of this quest involves proving your worth to Vilkas and Kodlak Whitemane, and then becoming familiar with the people in the Companions and their living space. After you are officially accepted into the group as an initiate, you are free to take weapons off the walls and use the beds available in the Living Quarters. You will be asked to help in a randomly generated quest (called a Radiant Quest) before you can begin the next official quest for the Companions, so approach a member of the group to help them with anything they need.

Proving Honor

Objectives:

Talk to Skjor

Speak to Farkas

Retrieve the Fragment

Return to Jorrvaskr

Once you arrive again in Jorrvaskr after helping any member of the Companions with a Radiant Quest, Skjor will ask you to help him find a rumored piece of Ysgramor’s Blade. This is going to be your test for official membership into the Companions, and Farkas will join you for your journey to Dustman’s Cairn. Although he is not officially a follower at this time, he will still assist you like one. (See our Companion Followers section for information on Farkas)

Make your way to the cave and fight your way through the straightforward hallways. Watch out for Draugr and Skeletons until you get to an open area with some thrones. You will notice that the way is blocked; head into the small room on the side of the main room and activate the lever inside. You will be trapped, but Farkas will help you out after you find out his dirty little secret.

Head through the newly opened door and continue forward. Fight off the Draugr and Skeletons until you reach a large chamber with many coffins in it. The key to the door is in an urn nearby. Continue through the door, killing Skeever and a Giant Frostbite Spider until you reach the last large room. There is a wall with a Word of Power for the Shout- Fire Breath, and the piece of Ysgramor’s Blade you seek in the center of the room.

When you approach the exit, a number of Draugr will attack. This is a fairly lengthy battle, so conserve your magic and stamina as much as you can by taking a secondary role to Farkas. When the last Draugr is killed, head through a small tunnel in a coffin to find an exit back to the beginning of the cave.

Return to Skjor in Jorrvaskr with the Fragment of Ysgramor’s Blade. After an initiation ceremony, you can speak with any of the other leading members for more Radiant Quests, but you are not required to complete any to open up the next official Companions quest.

Welcome to the Companions!

The Silver Hand

Objectives:

Talk to Skjor

Meet with Skjor at Night

Enter the Underforge

Participate in the Blood Ritual

Talk to Aela

Kill the Werewolf Hunters

Talk to Aela

Speak with Skjor in Jorrvaskr and he will ask you to meet him at the Underforge at night. The entrance is found in a rock wall north of the hall. Welcome to the ritual hall, where you will become a werewolf. Activate the Sacred Font to start your first change. Be careful where you go in this form. It is much easier to wait for an hour and use your new ability where you won’t be caught for your first change. Everyone will run from you, but no crimes count against you when you return to human form. However, people will automatically try to attack you in fear. You can only turn into werewolf form once a day, unless you undertake the Daedric Quest: Ill Met by Moonlight.

When you come to, visit Aela and she will ask for your help defeating a group of werewolf hunters located in Gallows Rock. Take down the Silver Hand members in the cave and make your way to the leader, Krev the Skinner. He comes with two guards, so if you would like to transform into a werewolf, now would be a good time.

After a sad scene with Aela, you must complete two more Radiant Quests in order to continue on with the Companions Quests. Speak with any main members in order to begin them.

Blood’s Honor

Objectives:

Collect a Glenmoril Witch’s Head

(Optional) Wipe out the Glenmoril Witches

Return to Kodlak

Visit Kodlak after completing two Radiant Quests and speak with him for a little while. You are tasked by Kodlak to kill a Glenmoril Witch at its Coven’s cave.

When you enter the cave, the first Glenmoril Witch is close by. She has very powerful frost spells, so try to get a sneak attack in before she sees you. When you defeat the first one, you are technically done with the quest after retrieving her head, but you can defeat the others in the cave if you want more experience or loot.

Head back to Whiterun and go towards Jorrvaskr. Apparently the Silver Hand have attacked the home base and killed more members in order to steal the Fragments of Wuuthrad you have collected. You are scolded for not being there during the ambush, but Aela begins to understand what Kodlak was seeking. The Glenmoril quest was not in vain, but it is now postponed until vengeance is wrought on the Silver Hand and the pieces of Wuuthrad are reclaimed.

NOTE: There are no Radiant Quest available at this time.

Purity of Revenge

Objective:

Retrieve the Fragments of Wuuthrad

(Optional) Wipe Out the Silver Hand

Return to Jorrvaskr

Vilkas asks you to accompany him to the Silver Hand headquarters in Driftshade Refuge. It is a fairly long trek by foot to the cave, which is located south of Dawnstar. Fast travel closer if possible, or take a horse to make the journey faster.

Run into battle as soon as you arrive, since there are guards all around the entrance. You are not required to wipe out every enemy here, but you may as well in memory of your fallen comrades.

Enter the cave and seek out the Silver Hand inside. The stolen Fragments of Wuuthrad are found farther inside the caverns, but be careful of ambushes and traps on the way. To reach Driftshade Cellar, activate a lever to the right of some spears in the first area.

Fight through more Silver Hand and find the dungeon’s prison cells through a small corridor. Release any werewolves if you want, then pass through the snowy tunnels back into the cellar area. Now enter into the large hall area and defeat more Silver Hand, then head south into the refuge area. Head left to find the remaining Silver Hand members and the pieces of Wuuthrad that were stolen.

NOTE: There are still no Radiant Quests available when you return to Jorrvaskr.

Glory of the Dead

Objectives:

Attend Kodlak’s Funeral

Retrieve Kodlak’s Fragment

Give the Final Fragment to Eorlund

Meet the Circle

Go to Ysgramor’s Tomb with the Circle

Return Wuuthrad to Ysgramor

Get to the Burial Chamber

Speak to Kodlak

Put Witch Head into the Fire

Defeat the Wolf Spirit

Speak to Kodlak

Return to the group in Jorrvaskr and attend the funeral of Kodlak. Eorlund asks you to retrieve the last piece of Wuuthrad in Kodlak’s living quarters in order to prepare them. Return the pieces to Eorlund and head to the Underforge to speak with the Companions.

If you read Kodlak’s journal in his room, you know what he wanted to do before he died: cure himself of the disease that causes one to become a werewolf. Vilkas suggests that they respect his final wishes by visiting the Tomb of Ysgramor, a place that Harbinger souls travel to get to Sovngarde. The tomb has been closed off because Ysgramor’s Blade has been destroyed, but Eorlund says there is a way to reunite the pieces. After the blade is reforged, Eorlund gives it to you and the group sets off.

The entrance to the Tomb of Ysgramor is northwest of Winterhold in the ice fields. Once inside, place the weapon in the hands of the statue to open the door to the north. You will be exploring the cavern without Vilkas, but the others will be accompanying you.

Slay the ghosts of the Companions past as you head towards the double doors to the west. Once through, head south and defeat ghosts as they appear. Farkas leaves you as you head into the cobwebs, so be a little more cautious while fighting the Frostbite Spiders ahead. Find the chain in the south and head into the main tomb, then find the iron door into the next hall.

Make your way through the corridor and activate the handle on the pedestal. Head north into the large chamber, fighting more ghosts until you reach Ysgramor’s chamber. Speak with Kodlak inside and he informs you how to break the werewolf curse. Put the witch’s head into the fire and defeat the ethereal werewolf spirit of Kodlak. He is now free of the curse and can now reach Sovngarde.

Follow the exit on the eastern side and up some stairs to the entrance. Take Ysgramor’s Blade from the statue if you wish to use it. If you head back to Jorrvaskr, you can complete any Radiant Quests available. You can head to the Skyforge in Whiterun if you wish to forge unique weapons, if you have the skill. Aela, Farkas, Vilkas, Ria, Njada, Athis, and Torvar are now all available as Companion Followers as well.

Congratulations, you have completed the Companions questline!

Part Two: Finding the Thalmor Embassy and Alduin’s Wall
Part Three: Finding the Elder Scroll and Defeating Alduin in Sovngarde

Unbound

Objectives:
Make your way to the Keep
Enter the Keep with Hadvar or Ralof
Escape Helgen
Find some equipment
Loot Gunjar’s body
(Optional) Search the barrel for potions
(Optional) Attempt to pick the lock to the cage

You start your game out riding down a path in a dilapidated cart, across from you are two prisoners just like you. You were caught trying to cross the border, but at the same time two Nord rebels have been arrested for treason against the High King of Skyrim. Meet the Ralof of the Stormcloaks, along with an unnamed and bound stranger and someone else caught in the crossfire.
General Tallius of the Imperial guard is at the gate of the town you are being brought to, and he lets your small caravan of criminals into the town of Helgen. Little do you know what your supposed fate is, until you reach an area of stone with a chopping block.

Once it becomes your turn, approach the guard and choose your class and appearance. Choose wisely, because the race you choose now will affect you for the rest of your game. (Take a look at our Picking Your Race section in Basics for more information.)

Follow the captain to the crowd and watch the Imperial Soldier talk down to your friend in your cart, now identified as Ulfric Stormcloak, leader of the rebellion. Just as it becomes your turn, a dragon sweeps down and saves you from your pitiful destiny. As soon as you can move, follow Ralof into a tower to take cover. Follow him until a dragon named Alduin busts through the tower wall and breathes fire through the staircase.

Jump through the hole in the wall to the Inn at the east, and make your way to the bottom floor of the Inn and then outside where you will see some guards staring down a dragon, who takes flight soon after. Stay behind Hadvar as he leads you to safety and searches for General Tallius. At the keep, make the choice to follow Hadvar (Imperial Army) or Ralof (Stormcloaks) into the side of the tower they are standing. This choice affects what you see for the rest of the quest and also who you are initially friends with in the civil war questline, but you are free to change sides after this quest if you decide to help the other party.
Head into the tower and have your companion take off the binding around your hands. Search through some nearby areas to find some armor and weapons, and then choose what kinds of items and/or spells you would like to start with by visiting your menu screen and equipping things. Drop whatever items you are not using and equip whatever you are, then follow your companion through the halls, defeating any enemies while picking up any valuable items from corpses and in the area around you. Make it a habit now to loot everything you see and looking on shelves, tables, bookshelves, and in boxes, barrels, and chests. Riches don’t come from your fallen enemies alone.
As you delve deeper into the caves below, you will fight your way into a spider lair and eventually come across a bear. Sneak past the bear if you want, or take him down with a fire spell or weapon of choice. You can use this opportunity to raise your sneak spell by sneaking past the bear and behind your companion through the cave.
As you make your way out of the cave, a dragon flies by and your companion leaves you. Now you are free to explore Skyrim on your own or continue to follow the main questline as you like. Now would be a great time to become acquainted with the overmap and learn what icons mean. Once you are comfortable with navigation, make your way by foot to the nearby village of Riverwood.

Before the Storm

Objectives:
Talk to Alvor in Riverwood
Talk to Gerdur in Riverwood
Talk to the Jarl of Whiterun

Make your way to Riverwood, south of Whiterun in the Whiterun Hold of Skyrim. If you are new to the game, it is wise to follow your companion that you were with while escaping from Helgen, but you are free to go your own way wherever you want. If you do follow your companion from the cave, you will make your way up a river path and to the Guardian Stones, which possess blessings that you can choose to help your character. These Stones help you learn skills faster, but you can only have one blessing at a time. Obviously, pick the Stone that most fits in with your character’s current play style, be it in stealth, magic, or combat. There are other Standing Stones around Skyrim that have other powerful blessings, but be warned: any new blessing that you accept from another Stone replaces the one you currently have.
Meet your companion and his uncle at the smithing area of Riverwood, so you can speak about what is going on in Skyrim. The uncle has some things he offers to give you, including a garnet and some potions. Take what you need and head for Whiterun to speak with the Jarl.
NOTE: Make sure that you pick up the side quest: The Golden Claw from the Riverwood Trader before you head to Bleak Falls Barrow for the next quest. It is not necessary to this particular quest, but will help you access another part of the dungeon you can’t otherwise. You can also pick up a quest on the outskirts of Whiterun that will start you on another questline with the Companions.
When you arrive in Whiterun, a guard will stop you. Convince him to let you through and make your way up to Dragonsreach, where the Jarl holds court. Speak with him and ask him to send help for Riverwood. He will give you a token of gratitude and ask you to speak with the court wizard.

Bleak Falls Barrow

Objectives:
Talk to Farengar
Retrieve the Dragonstone
Deliver the Dragonstone to Farengar

Find Farengar Secret-Fire and he will ask you to head to Bleak Falls Barrow to find a stone tablet, also known as a Dragonstone. Bleak Falls Barrow is north of Riverwood, so travel to the town and take the path heading out. Head into Bleak Falls Barrow and make your way to the first puzzle of the dungeon, a stone puzzle that has to match the opposing picture (Solution: Snake, Snake, Whale).
You’ll come across a Dark Elf who has been trapped by a Frostbite Spider. Release him and he runs away towards some special treasure further in the treasure, bent on reaching it before you do. Battle through some Draugr that defeat your fleeing friend and get to the dead body when all is clear. Take the Golden Claw and Arvel’s Journal off of him and read it if you want. Continue on, being careful of swinging traps and Draugr along the way.  Find the entrance to the Bleak Falls Sanctum and go in.
More Draugr are in this area, so keep fighting through until you get to a door guarded by a puzzle. Take a look at the Golden Claw and notice that the answer is on the wrist. Spin the circles in the door to match the claw and activate the door with the Golden Claw (Solution from top to bottom: Bear, Moth Owl). It will open up and lead you into a chamber that holds a Word of Power and a group of Draugrs. After defeating your enemies, search the Draugr and collect the Dragonstone that you came for. At this time, you cannot unlock the Word of Power without defeating a dragon, so hold tight. It will happen soon.
Return to Dragonsreach and give the Dragonstone to Farengar. Speak to the Jarl for your reward and to begin your next quest: killing your first dragon.
NOTE: If you return to the Riverwood Trader with the Golden Claw from Bleak Falls Barrow, you will receive a gold reward based on your level.

Dragon Rising

Objectives:
Talk to Jarl Balgruuf
Meet Irileth near the Western Watchtower
Kill the dragon
Investigate the dragon
Report back to Jarl Balgruuf
(Optional) Use your new Shout power

The Jarl of Whiterun informs you that there has been a dragon sighted at the Western Watchtower, and he wants you to help defeat it. He gives you more armor and sends you with some guards to help. Head to the Western Watchtower marked on your map and notice the damage already done. The dragon is still there and ready to eat you too! Take out a bow and start shooting the dragon until he dies, then approach the body of the dragon for a surprising twist. You’ve just absorbed your first dragon soul, and everyone is amazed. Now would be a good time to unlock your first dragon shout in your magic menu by using the dragon soul to learn the Word of Power that you found in Bleak Falls Barrow.
Head back to the Jarl and explain what happened. If you didn’t notice the large, booming call that came after you defeated the dragon, the Jarl informs you that it was the call of the Greybeards. This group of monks lives in the high mountain village of High Hrothgar, where they learn and practice the Way of the Voice. Best not keep them waiting!

The Way of the Voice

Objectives:
Speak to the Greybeards
Demonstrate your “Unrelenting Force” Shout
Speak to Arngeir
Learn the Word of Power from Einarth
Demonstrate your “Unrelenting Force” Shout (x3)
Learn the Word of Power from Borri
Demonstrate your “Whirlwind Sprint” Shout
Speak to Arngeir for further training

To find your way up the mountain to High Hrothgar, there is an easy way and a hard way. The easy way is to travel to Ivarstead by a path east of Whiterun and travel up the mountain path nearby. The hard way involves climbing up the cliffs yourself. Either way, when you reach High Hrothgar and the leader of the Greybeards asks you to use your shout to prove you are the warrior they called. Use your shout and Arngeir is so impressed and wishes to teach you a little more about the Greybeards’ way of life. Arngeir asks another monk to teach you a new Word of Power for your shout Unrelenting Force.
You are what is known as the Dragonborn, a human born with the soul of the dragon and the ability to speak their ancient language. After learning Ro (Balance) to add to Fus (Force) from Einarth, you are asked to demonstrate your new, more powerful Shout. Equip it in your menu and hit him with it three times, and he will direct you to meet Borri for a completely new Word of Power for the Shout Whirlwind Sprint. After you demonstrate your ability to use your new Shout by traveling through a closing door in the area, you can approach Arngeir for more information. You need to find the Horn of Jurgen Windcaller to be considered worthy of being a Greybeard.

The Horn of Jurgen Windcaller

Objectives:
Retrieve the horn
Meet with whoever took the horn
Return the horn to Arngeir
Learn the Word of Power from Wulfgar
Receive the Greybeards’ greeting

Find your new quest marker for the village of Ustengrav in Hjaalmarch Hold. You will be confronted with Bandits and Necromancers at first in this dungeon, so be prepared for magic attacks until those enemies are killed by Draugrs. Find your way to a small crypt that has a chain to pull, opening up the way to the large hall and a bridge to cross. Open the door to Ustengrav Depths and make your way into the large grotto area.
If you travel down the ledges to the bottom of the area, you will find a banquet hall. Head south and cross the bridge to leave the hall, then explore the corridors leading to another large grotto area. Defeat the enemies below and find the wall for a new Word of Power for the Shout-Become Ethereal.  Defeat the Draugrs that emerge, then head back to the throne room. Cross the large bridge heading up and clear the enemies to find a puzzle area blocking your path. In order to get through all the doors, you must quickly use the Shout-Whirlwind Sprint through each boundary. Once through, navigated the fire traps on the floor and open the wooden door to the east covered in cobwebs. Pull the chain to open the door to the crypt of Jurgen Windcaller. Approach the coffin to find that the Horn has been stolen, replaced by a note to go to the Sleeping Giant Inn in Riverwood.  You can make a quick exit through the wooden door behind the sarcophagus when you are done with the area.
NOTE: The quest “Retrieve the Horn” is going to be failed regardless of your actions. Do not be alarmed.
Head to the Inn in Riverwood and rent a room from the innkeeper, Delphine. Enter the room and Delphine will follow, aware that you are the one she has been waiting for. She gives you the Horn.
Return to High Hrothgar and speak with Arngeir. He comments that now that you have the Horn, you must be officially recognized by the Greybeards. You are taught another Word of Power, Dah (Push), the final word of the Shout-Unrelenting Force. Now you must stand in the center of the room and be shouted at by a bunch of monks with long beards, a ritual passed down for generations. Now you are an official member of the Greybeards and have access to all of High Hrothgar. Every 36 hours you can speak with Argneir for a new Word of Power to meditate on, and if you wish, you can return to the Tomb of Jurgen Windcaller and put the Horn in its place to get a free dragon soul to spend on another Shout.

A Skyrim follower can be one of the best ways to supplement your adventure in areas where you may be lacking. Because of the different types of followers that exist, you have a huge selection of characters that can act as classes to help you. Some followers focus on offensive damage dealing, while others are good in stealth or magic.

Your Skyrim follower is bound to follow you wherever you go. While some will join you for free, others require money or personal favors before they will befriend you. The housecarl group is available to you only after you become a thane in whatever stronghold you take up residence, which requires you to do personal favors for the Jarl. Other followers can be found in taverns and hired to assist you. Guild followers will become available to you after you finish a certain number of quests for storylines such as the Thieves Guild or the Dark Brotherhood. Finally, some animal companions are available for money or as part of a questline.  All of these options give great choice for followers that match your play style and act as personal friends that speak to you during your long journey.

A Skyrim follower acts as personal shadows that will protect you with their life, and they can also be used as places to store excess items.  Your followers will always equip the best items that you give them, so if you wish to have them use certain kinds of items, just give them whatever you want and take any extra items they may have of that kind. Followers are inclined to equip certain kinds of weapons and items based on personal preference, so if you give them different kinds of items at once, they will automatically equip the best kind of item that they prefer, no matter if another item is better.  For example, follower Aela prefers to wear light armor and use archery, but she will wear heavy armor and use two handed weapons if that is the only thing that she has.

Your Skyrim follower will follow your lead whenever they can. If you are attempting a sneaky takedown, they will sneak and refrain from attacking until they have been personally seen. When you unsheathe your weapon, so will they. Often, if you are using long-range attacks, they will pull out a bow as well. You can also command your followers to do different actions, such as wait in a specific place or activate things in the world. If at any point you decide you no longer require your Skyrim follower’s assistance, you can tell him you wish to part ways and they will return to wherever you originally found him. Your follower will keep any equipment she has, so if she leaves by accident or without your knowledge (as it is with some quests you start in the game) you can easily track them back down and start your journey with them again like nothing happened. Animal companions are slightly different, since they can’t hold any items or be commanded, but the same basics apply.

One important note to remember is that your Skyrim follower cannot be killed by enemies permanently, only temporarily while they regain consciousness. However, you are the only agent that can permanently kill your companion, if you deal the killing blow. So be careful where you aim your weapons or spells. An area-effect spell can easily kill your follower, so if you are a mage and like to cast spells indiscriminately, you may be better off conjuring creatures instead of taking a killable friend with you. These companions also have max levels that they can reach, which mirrors yours until they cannot level any longer. Please see our detailed section on each follower for each character’s max level along with other information on preferred weapons and spells.

Followers are one of the best ways to help you get through tough times, and are great friends to break up the monotony of traveling alone. Not to mention you can marry some potential companions as well. Get out there and find your personal companion before you start your journey and you won’t regret it.
